Yeah, Our People Will Call Your People...

After a moment's reflection on Seymour's Interview Blunders post, I realized what a miserable interviewer I am. Having made almost every mistake listed in that entry, I've missed my share of opportunities. This summer, I'll be interviewing for a variety of positions at a number of production companies, magazines, and websites. What, other than what's been said elsewhere in this blog, should I do to brace myself and increase my chances of making it through this harrowing process alive and employed? As always, any advice (no matter how seemingly obvious or absurd) would be greatly appreciated.

I know it sounds corny, but interview with your friends. Give them a copy of your resume and let them ask away. Role playing can sound like it's easy, but if you take it seriously it can be a huge help because you can get instant feedback. You should definitely read up on all of the companies you are interviewing for. Know the facts on their website, when the company (or magazine) started, how many employees there are, how large their circulation or audience is. This will show them that you are already preparing yourself for their company. Also, it never hurts to have a question ready for them such as: What is the magazines plan for the next 5 years? Is this company focused on increasing general circulation or looking target a different audience? Because then the interviewer could they are looking to target an audience that you may have something to offer to the company to help achieve their goal. And you may gain knowledge not on the website, and also get extra brownie points.
